Meet Leane: Ecologist

I started a career in ecology due to my curiosity and love for nature. I have a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Marine Ecology and a Doctorate in Philosophy in Environmental Science. I have about 15 years’ experience in ecosystem management, catchment-to-sea management, indigenous management, restoration planning and practices; and more recently social-environmental research.
I applied for the role at Buckton because I was attracted to working one on one with landowners and farmers to protect indigenous vegetation through land covenants and ecologically sustainable land use. What I love most about my job is the diversity and getting to meet new clients. And getting to see rare indigenous vegetation and ecosystems like duneland lakes and wetlands, Australian Bittern, and longfin eels during my day is a bonus!
A typical day at Buckton can be a mix of data analysis, site visits and being in nature, GIS work, and report writing. I’ve enjoyed getting to use empirical evidence in responses to Council, such as wetlands are less than 1% of their original extent (at both a regional and national scale), yet issues of policy prohibit their protection and future survival.
My advice to anyone starting out in Ecology is practice ecology, learn ecology, and learn your place in the ecology. I truly feel the Earth needs more ecologists!
Meet Cedric: Planner

In South Africa, I pursued a career in nature conservation, earning a BTech degree. This led to 15 years working as an Ecologist on Big Five game reserves. I later shifted my career toward environmental consulting. and went on to complete a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Management. I then spent five years as a Senior Environmental Consultant, where I was fortunate to lead and contribute to numerous environmental impact assessments for large infrastructure and renewable energy projects.
After immigrating to NZ in 2015, I found that the most closely aligned role to environmental consulting in NZ was that of a resource consents planner. Since 2016 I built on my planning experience by volunteering and working with several planning firms. In 2020, I joined Buckton as a planner —and I haven’t looked back since.
A typical day as a planner can be attending project meetings, consulting with applicants and specialists, undertaking site visits, preparing various reports, and reviewing draft conditions. Each day looks different!
Aspects of my role I’ve enjoyed is getting to learn new NZ legislation, Regional Plans, District Plans, National Policy Statements, National Environmental Standards etc. It’s also rewarding when you obtain a positive resource consent decision for tricky applications and seeing clients happy.
Buckton has an outstanding workplace culture. There’s a genuine sense of mutual respect across all levels of staff and management. People truly get along, creating a supportive and collaborative environment. Many team members have been with the company for decades (some for as long as 25 years), which speaks volumes about the kind of workplace it is.
If you’re considering a career in planning, don’t be scared to put yourself out there and ask for the opportunity to volunteer so that you can learn. Like my late dad used to say, “If you don’t ask you won’t get”.
Meet Aaron: Graduate Surveyor

I’m a graduate surveyor and began my surveying career at Buckton, where the supportive culture and guidance from the Directors and the rest of the team have really helped me grow my skills and develop professionally.
Working on a wide range of projects—from planning to surveying in both urban and rural areas—has strengthened my experience and brought me closer to achieving my cadastral license.
I appreciate both the challenges and support I’ve received, as they’ve pushed me to improve. I love being a surveyor because I can see a project come to life, from initial plans to tangible outcomes that shape communities. I’m proud to be part of Buckton.
If you are looking to start a career in surveying, or are new to the game, I encourage you to be curious, ask questions, and learn skills in both the field and in the office.
Meet Paris: Field Survey Technician

I first became interested in surveying when I was helping a family member with some earthworks on their property. I thought it would be a good career to get into, getting to work outdoors and watch projects come to life. I also grew up in a family who worked in the property and building industries.
Before starting at Buckton, I had no qualifications, but since starting as a Field Survey Assistant in 2024, I have completed my Level 4 certificate in Surveying through Connexis and built so many valuable skills. There are lots of opportunities for career development, and the ability to get stuck into challenging tasks to extend my skillset.
No two days are the same, and I get to work on a variety of sites from farmland to construction sites, to residential properties. I also get to work at all stages of a project, whether it’s doing a topographical survey, or the final as built of the finished project.
My favourite aspect of my job is the versatileness, getting to be out in the field and enjoying the outdoors, and being able to create a plan of the work completed which is rewarding. I also love getting to meet new people and being a part of bringing their projects to life.
My advice for anyone starting a career in surveying is to jump into the deep end! Get stuck into using the equipment and technology to get more exposure. The Level 4 certificate through Connexis is a great foundation for setting you up for success. For me it’s been a lot of learning from the Buckton team around me, who have years of experience and so much knowledge.
